Tore Bergby
One of Norway’s best sleddog racers; renowned breeder of Alaskan huskies
Tore Bergby has extensive experience with dogs and sleddog racing. He started in 1980 and has been competing in long-distance races ever since. In 2005, he made his debut at the world-renown Finnmarksløpet, the second longest sled race in the world. After six days and nights on the mountain, he finished third and received the award “Rookie of the Year!”
Because sleddog racing requires athletes to train and care for their dogs at least five to eight hours every day, Bergby knows the importance of good nutrition and chooses to use Canine Essentials™ Original as an important part of his dogs’ training routines. Carefully planned feedings with exact amounts of fat, carbohydrates, proteins, and vitamins are decisive for the dogs’ performance abilities. Bergby explains:
“Canine Essentials gives our dogs great energy; it seems to help them be relaxed and focused in their natural environment and also positively impacts their skin and coats. We like that Canine Essentials is a pure and safe product that is very palatable.”
Bergby has participated in 11 Femunden races and twice received the award “Best in taking care of dogs.” He lives in the middle of beautiful Luksefjell with his girlfriend, Hilde Askildt, who is also a sleddog racer. They have 20 grown Alaskan huskies in training all year, in addition to 15 puppies and youngsters.
Long distance racing is an extreme sport for a reason, as a storm can bring temperatures down to minus 50 OC. The distance between every checkpoint varies between 50 km to 140 km, and between them the teams are on their own. These are just a few of the reasons that Bergby takes every precaution to make sure his teams are ready for the race and have received proper nourishment.
Aside from racing, Bergby has turned his love for the outdoors into a living. He owns and runs Luksefjell Villmarksleir (www.luksefjell.com), a wilderness camp where he offers different outdoor events and activities year round.
