How Do You Shower? For some, taking a shower is drudgery; a daily cleansing ritual to be performed with as little time and effort as possible. Technique is ignored, brand name products are frivolous and wasteful, and lingering after basic cleaning is unheard of.
Other people, however, find the shower to be a soothing and relaxing experience. It becomes an escape from cares and a calming oasis in the tumult of daily life. The fragrance and experience provided by fine products become as important as the products’ cleansing powers.
Which type of shower person are you? Whether you are an in-and out shower taker or you consider a visit behind the steamy glass an hour-long commitment, everyone can benefit from a little knowledge about techniques and products.

 | One of the first steps in your shower routine should be exfoliating. This oft-overlooked or avoided process removes dead, dry surface cells and reveals the fresh, glowing skin beneath. The most effective method is to use a natural sea sponge loofah, which is slightly rougher than a normal sponge, to apply your exfoliator. It is not necessary to be forceful during exfoliation, as gentle, constant pressure and motions will get the job done perfectly. Give your skin time to recover between exfoliations; once or twice a week is plenty to reap the benefits of smoother, soft skin.

 | Avoid skin-drying soap products and select a body wash with oils and botanicals that will leave your skin purified and pampered. A wellformulated body wash will not leave your skin feeling taut or dried out, and will leave a subtle, lasting fragrance. Your bare hands or a soft loofah are your best options for gentle, thorough cleansing.
Hair Care Washing and conditioning your hair are probably the most complicated aspects of your shower program. One of the secrets to great cleansing and conditioning is water temperature. Hot water can strip natural oils from your hair and is counterproductive to what you are trying to accomplish.

 | Lukewarm water should be used for pre- and post-shampoo and conditioning rinsing. If your hair is oily or you are getting product buildup, using a clarifying shampoo every few weeks will take care of the problem.
Product labels often instruct you to “lather, rinse, and repeat.” Unless your hair hasn’t been washed in days, the only benefit of repeated washing is for the shampoo company as you use more of their product. One washing is sufficient to get your hair clean.
When shampooing, use your fingertips to gently massage your scalp. Begin at your hairline and work your way in using firm, circular motions. This not only feels great, but stimulates and increases blood flow to your hair follicles. Deep conditioning can have noticeable benefits to your hair, but should be performed weekly at most. Whether you use a professional product or a home remedy, wrapping a towel or shower cap around your hair will intensify and speed up the conditioning process.
Shaving Shaving is another commonly performed shower activity. Razor burn, rashes, and cuts are not necessary byproducts of the shaving process, and can be avoided with a little care. The shower is the best environment for shaving, as the steam and moisture soften hair and lubricate the skin. Waiting to shave until the end of your shower will give your hair as much time as possible to soften. Avoid using soap, which can dry skin. Shaving creams and gels are effective lubricants, as is baby oil if your skin is especially sensitive.
Shaving dulls razor blades much more quickly than most people think—four to five shaves before replacement is optimal. A dull blade doesn’t shave as closely, and is also much more likely to cause cuts and irritation. Electric razors with foil heads are almost as effective as safety blades, but straight-edged razors are best left to barber shops. If your skin has been properly prepared, a single-bladed safety razor is usually sufficient; double, triple and four-bladed razors may irritate the skin. Shaving in the same direction of hair growth will not provide quite as close of a shave, but will minimize the chances of red bumps and ingrown hairs. Rinsing the blade between every stroke will remove buildup and result in a cleaner shave. If you do happen to nick yourself, immediately dry the area and apply a styptic pencil, which will sting a bit but stop the bleeding.
After Showering What you do immediately after showing is as important as what you do during. Patting yourself dry with a soft cotton towel will prevent irritation of delicate, newlyshaved skin. Your hair should be dried with similar care, as it is most vulnerable when damp. Toner and moisturizer should be applied immediately to equalize skin and replace lost moisture.
